Temporary Autonomous Zone / 3
at Teatr Studio / WARSAW (Poland)
4.10.2014 - 16.11.2014

Temporary Autonomous Zone / 3 is a project by ƒƒ, an international group of feminist artists, now in its third phase in Warsaw, with previous iterations occurring in Vienna and Berlin. TAZ/3 is fueled by 24 hours of intensive programming, involving over 40 international artists from various fields, and concluded by a six-week-long exhibition – all hosted within the striking wings of the Palace of Culture and Sciences (Palac Kultury i Nauki), where Teatr Studio and Galeria Studio are located. In a playful way, ƒƒ’s Temporary Autonomous Zone references the famous manifesto by Hakim Bey, T. A. Z. TheTemporary Autonomous Zone, Ontological Anarchy, Poetic Terrorism, with its anarchistic and yet carnivalesque strategies. TAZ/3 upturns definitions and reverses their order. Autonomy is understood here in the broadest terms: the role of the places and figures (artist, curator, actor, director) are frequently diverted, reversed, and renegotiated.

Members of ƒƒ include sixteen feminist artists hailing from various countries, including: Germany, Greece, Austria, The United States, Slovakia, Denmark, and the Netherlands. Members of the group invite other artists and cultural producers to work collaboratively with ƒƒ on projects that evolve through meetings and discussions. Temporary Autonomous Zone / 3 constitutes an intermediary community that exists between Polish and international artists who have been collaborating intensively over the past year. Working together, they have not only prepared performances and artworks, but have broadened their artistic practices and vested new friendships.

The exhibition features the artists and their invited guests. The work displayed within will consist of artifacts, installations, and stage props used in the predated performances, as well as the documentation of recent works. Both the 24-hour block of events and the exhibition reference the history of the Teatr Studio as a center for the arts, conceived of and created in the 1970s by Józef Szajna as one institutional body, combining the activities of the theater and the gallery.
